Journal Entry 69: Reflection Piece

During my experience throughout this capstone I have learned a lot. In comparison from my last capstone I had more responsibility. I felt like it was the real deal. It was nice. I have learned that it's important to get things done on time and not leave them to the end where we're rushing around. It's important to keep in contact with the client and show him our progress throughout the period.

When it comes to layout I learned more about definition and how to show more depth. Also remember that the farther back something is the less detail it has. I noticed when I added in the critique from my mentor; Randy the layouts look better and more realistic. For instance when I drawing a tree to put more detail on the edges and less toward the centre to create the shape and make it look flat. With coloring I feel I have learned more about how to use it and how to collaborate colors to make the backgrounds look good. When I painted the location 2 backgrounds I had to create a color scheme for the throne and the tree. I found the colors I chose fit and added to the rest of the background. Something else I realized about color is you tend to use colors you wouldn't think to use. If the color seems to not make sense to you then use it. It's surprising how much different added to a painting. I am so happy that I got the oppotunity to continue my layouts and got a chance to practice with color more because I want this type of work to be my coreer. I now have more layouts and background under my belt.

With the animation I really enjoyed the process but with scene 15 I had a quite a time getting the walk cycle for the Fool correct. I spent about a week working on that one scene. I needed to place the legs correctly in the walk cycle for when I animated him walking across the scene. I had to make sure the frames were spaced consistantly so he would walk right. But Overall I am happy I got a chance to animate and work on the a couple of the builds so I have the experience along side of my layout skills.

For time management I feel I did pretty well. Toward the end the capstone I made sure the backgrounds got done. There were times I was worried about if the backgrounds were going to get done when I wanted them to But in the end they are done and look great. I also got my scenes animated in time even though scene 15 took me a while to do.

Overall I still feel animation is the career I want. I love it so much. I like the professional aspect and I don't feel like a beginner anymore. I don't think there is anything about animation that would to turn me away from it. That's how much I enjoy it. From this capstone and from the rest of the two years experience I will take everything I have learned and apply it to my position out the work field.

Today I got everything I needed done. All the backgrounds are finished. My scenes are animated and exported and all the credits are completed. It's so nice have accomplished everything I set out to do.

Today I got a lot done. I finished BG_L2_002. I also painted BG_L1_004, BG_L2_001 and I a got a lot painted on BG_L2_001-A. Tomorrow I will finish that background. Jessie is doing BG_L1_003. It's awesome that I only need to finish BG_L2_001-A and then all the background will be done.

Today I finished BG_L1_001 and I painted BG_L1_002 and BG_L1_005. I also got a good start on BG_L2_002. Tomorrow I'm going to finish that background.

Today I finished animating scene 15. It took me a while because I had to make sure the legs were spaced properly. I also colored the fool that's in my scenes. Tonight I I colored the fool build and I have the first layout almost colored. I just need to figure out how to color the lines.

Today I worked on scene 15 some more. I played around with the spacing of the frames. I have it done for now. I made a fade out at the end of the scene. I also made the changed to the introduction layout and now it's finalized.

Today I worked on scene 15 some more. I finished up the wall cycle for the fool. I now have him walking across the scene but I need to put in a few more frames to keep each step the same speed.

Today I worked on scene 15 some more. I put the symbols over the rough walk cycle and I drew in the feet I needed.

Tonight I worked on scene 15 some more. I made another rough walk cycle. I think this one looks better. I also compressed all the layouts I fixed up that has mulitple layers and I replaced all the old layouts with the new ones.

Today I worked some more on scene 15 but I ended up starting over because it wasn't working the way I wanted it to. I sent our client a color BG and characters test earlier. He got back to me and wanted things more lightened. So I made another color BG and characters test and sent that one to our client.

Tonight I worked on scene 15 some more. I made another head symbol for the fool so the angle he's on will work. I also added the hand to the right arm.

Today I scanned in the layouts for locations 1 and 2. I touched up the layouts for location 3 and scanned them in as well. I also worked scene 15. I had to make a symbol for my scene because the fool needed a down angle of his upper body so it would look right and I got the entire walk cycle almost animated.

Today I played around with two of the previous introduction layouts I did and created four more of them. Two of the layouts are red and the other two are yellow. Each set has a blank background and a gradient background and the font in each layout has a drop shadow as well. This afternoon I got a good start on scene 15. I got a rough 3/4 front walk cycle that I can use as a guide for when I animate.

Today I am going to be working a bit more on scene 10. I want to see if I can add more animation to it. Then I will start scene 15. Where the fool is just walking in scene 15 I am going to make a treadmill walk and use that.

Today I was able to do what I planned. I made some changes on the introduction layout. I made 4 other introduction layouts using different colors, drop shadows and outlines. I got to add more critique from my mentor into the layouts for location design. And I was able to take part in fixing the build of one of the Characters; Donald. He needed to be redone so he would work properly.

Today I have attempted more animation and I was trying to fix up the Fool build. The Head and everything on it needs to be in it's own symbol. I have done that but I think some re-layering needs to be done. So I'm going to wait and talk to Jessie about that before we continue animating because I really don't know what to do there.

Today I got BG_L2_001 fixed up. I changed BG_L2_000 and BG_L2_001 to BG_L2_001 and BG_L2_001-A because they are the same layout. I also got the introduction layout finished today and I like how it looks. Right now the layout I used is in pencil but it will be changed once the color is added.

Today I am going to fix BG_L2_001 because I forgot to add in the other branch that's in back of the throne. Then I will continue with the introduction layout with the leaves and vines and get that finished as well. And if everything goes well I can start animating.

Today I touched up the color test. But I think it could be touched up more. I also got to fix up the layouts for location 2 and scanned them in. And I got to start the layout for the introduction. I plan on doing a leaf and vine border.

Today I'm going to play around with the new color test a bit more. Then I'm going to fix the throne layouts and get a start on the introduction layout.

Today I was actually able to get the background for the color test finished. But I'm probably going to play around with it some more. It didn't take me all day to do and I think this background could the style we can use. I was able to keep the way I drew the background originally in the painting because when the layers were brought into Photoshop they were set to multiply and the lines quality was played with.

Today I'm going to be testing out another style for our background. Hopefully I can come up with a style that we can use and won't take us a long time to paint.

Today I couldn't do everything I wanted to do. The background is taking me too long and there is too much detail. We are going to start another style with straight fills and work from there.

Today I am going get the background I re-worked on last night checked over. Then I will continue to work on the background and hopefully get it completed today. Also I want to adjust the throne in a couple of my layouts so the location 2 scenes matches.

Today I got the color, light and shadow into the background. I find it looks a lot nicer and it didn't take me that long to do it. I am happy with it. I also like the light source as well.

I am now going to work on the background again. This time I am going to block in the color before I go into details. It makes a lot of sense to do that because it's good to see the entire mood at the beginning.

Today I got 2 hrs and 15 min of work done on the colored background. I thinking about aerial perspective and light as I paint. Also as I paint I have the reference picture right next to me to keep me in the style.

Today I got BG_L2_001 fixed. I also found a font for the opening I'm creating for the Gaelic short film. I also tweeked the throne overlays of BG_L2_001 and BG_L2_002. I though it would be better to put the pieces of grass that are next to the legs on the same layer as the throne. And a new color style was established for the backgrounds and I started coloring BG_L1_003. I decided to stay with the same background.

Today I am going to fix the background for BG_L2_001. The trees need to be taller. Then I will scan in the layouts I corrected and get them onto the server and the FTP site. I am also going to finish off the coloring for BG_L1_003 to show to the client.

Today I got the establishing shot completed. I had to mess around with the tree size. I was able to finish BG_L2_002 but I had to play with the tree size as well. However I still need to play with the tree size for BG_L2_001.

TodayI am going to do the clean up for BG_L2_002. That needed to be changed a bit. The mound need to look as if the fairies were living inside of it. I am also going to do the establishing shot for location 2. This will show the entire location.

Today I got some color in the layout I lined. Mitch and Jessie also added some color. I got BG_L2_001 fixed. I need to fix BG_L2_002 and create the establishing shot for location 2.

Today I am going to get the color in the layout I lined last night. The layout I lined is BG_L1_003. I am also going to fix the fairy mound in the throne layouts because the mound needs to be bigger.

Today I got BG_L2_001 and BG_L2_002 completed and I got all the layouts I did so far up on the FTP site. In BG_L2_002 I noticed there wasn't enough room for the king to stand up so I had to make the hill wider.

Today I didn't get the layouts I wanted done. I had to red0 BG_L2_001 because the angle of the chair is wrong. I didn't get BG_L2_002 or BG_l3_001 done.

Today I was able to do the BG_L1_005 and scan it in. I also created a excel sheet to show what layout go with what scene. And I and I got a good start on BG_L2_001 but I'm not done with it yet.

Today I wasn't able to get 3 more layouts done. I was only able to do 1 more. The layout for BG_L1_004. I had to do BG_L1_002 twice more becaus I had to make sure the fairies had enough room to dance. I also had to fix up a part of BG_L1_003. I turned the gravel path into grass since the other layouts in the forest don't have a gravel path.

Today I am going to fix BG_L1_oo2 because I found a problem with the position of some of the trees where the fairies dance. I'm also hoping to do 3 more layouts.

I wasn't able to get through all my layouts today. However I was able to get through 3 of them. I also scanned in the first two layouts and put them in the layout folder in Gaelic folder.

Today I want to get through the first pass of my layouts by the end of the day. The layouts I am working on are for a short film which is a Gaelic fable.
